Behavioral Wellness Counseling and Psychology
At Avance Care, we’re interested in much more than the absence of illness. Our Behavioral Wellness providers will engage you in an active therapeutic process that will help you grow in self-awareness, make healthy choices, and achieve appropriate balance in all areas of your life. Avance Care therapists use a strength-based approach that helps you achieve your full potential and greatest degree of life satisfaction. We coordinate with your medical treatment team to help you draw on your capabilities and overcome the limitations imposed by illness and injury. We work with you to change negative behavioral patterns that perpetuate unhealthy habits, revise perspectives interfering with meaningful relationships in your life, and more.
Patient must have an established Avance Care primary care provider to enroll in Behavioral Wellness services.

What is Behavioral Wellness?
Your mind and body is all one system. Most patients see an overall improvement in their health when behavioral wellness services are added to their medical treatment plan. Our staff are available onsite at Avance Care clinics and work closely with your provider to coordinate a plan for your care.
Routine Screening Services
Research demonstrates that depression and many other common psychological health conditions frequently develop along with common chronic illnesses like heart disease, diabetes, and irritable bowel syndrome. Routine screenings for mental health conditions lead to both dramatically increased rates of correctly identifying and treating these conditions, as well as significant increases in positive outcomes from treatments directed at chronic physical illnesses. Frequent and robust screening is an integral element of our Behavioral Wellness program. We continually review literature and update our protocols to identify which screenings will help us maximize the quality of our healthcare. These screenings are kept as brief as possible and are administered online for your convenience. You can answer the screening questions through our web-based portal prior to your appointment or through a tablet or terminal at one of our offices. Online administration and scoring allow your healthcare provider to review the results with you in a timely manner and assist in guiding treatment decisions.
How the Therapeutic Process Works
Small changes can make a big difference
All of our services are provided by appropriately-licensed mental health specialists (clinical psychologists, licensed marriage and therapy therapists, licensed clinical social workers, and licensed professional counselors). Your provider will assist you in developing an individualized treatment plan that may involve individual, couple, family, or group therapy counseling sessions. You may be connected to community support groups and other resources as well. Our therapists are trained and experienced in dealing with a wide variety of behavioral health conditions and situations, including, but not limited to: depression, anxiety, grieving and loss, stress management, ADD and ADHD, chronic illness, substance abuse, work and career issues, parenting support, stress management, dementia management and caregiver support, preparation for and recovery from surgery, and adjusting to major life transitions such as relocation, retirement, divorce, and childbirth. Furthermore, we offer robust assessment and screening services to assist in clarifying diagnoses in complex and uncertain cases.
Overview of Behavioral Wellness Sessions
Initial Session: Intake/Assessment
The first session includes a comprehensive clinical assessment of each patient. The therapist will identify key areas in which additional information is needed, assist in articulating your symptoms, determine a working diagnosis, and develop initial recommendations for your treatment.
Sessions Two to Four: Early Phase/Evaluation
The next few sessions involve the therapist fully understanding your history, further confirming your diagnosis, evaluating your treatment needs, and formulating a treatment plan with your input.
Working Phase Sessions
Implementation of the treatment plan begins. During the treatment phase, the therapist engages you in working toward growth. This can be a challenging time for both patient and provider, as this mode of treatment is often less structured and less directive than most medical interventions you may have previously experienced.
